Located in the foothills of Clare in South Australia, this farmhouse is inspired by the vernacular of the homestead, from the pitched roofs and the sweeping verandah to the year-round warmth emanating from the Aga.
The views and topography of the site informed the siting of the house within a field of grasses. An internal courtyard provides respite from the strong winds that weather the hillside. A simple arrangement of living and sleeping zones and a centrally located kitchen reflects the client’s lifestyle and reinforces a connection to landscape.
Materials have been selected for their pragmatism, lending the house an uncontrived elegance that is appropriate to a rural setting. Hardwood cladding, metal roofing and double glazing ensure thermal comfort. Passive design principles have been considered throughout.
